Autumn Dinner in the Val d’Orcia, with Candles and Wild Berries

30 november 2016

An intimate and special birthday celebrated with a small group of family and friends to bask in the typical fall atmosphere of the Val d’Orcia: this was the request of a client who loves and knows Tuscany very well. The choice went to Borgo di Castelvecchio, the perfect place to spend a long weekend in nature, between horseback rides, wine tastings at wineries in Montalcino, and tours of the charming churches and abbeys in the surrounding area.

The celebrations culminated in a dinner that succeeded in bringing out the colours and flavours of autumn: on a cold and foggy night, the lit fireplace was irresistibly inviting. In the old granary with its woodbeam ceilings and antique furniture, the long table was splendidly decorated with numerous candelabras and candles, compositions with fall flowers (dahlias and garden cosmos), fruit, and wild berries by Fiori di Puscina. The simple and refined arrangements were accented by silver cutlery and underplates on a bare table.

The best products of the Val d’Orcia were featured on the menu, which was specially created for the guest of honour on the theme of wild game: bruschetta with new olive oil, soup with mushrooms and chestnuts from the Amiata mountain, pici pasta with wild boar sauce, roast venison with wild berry sauce and grilled wild boar. To end on a sweet note, there was a dark chocolate and chilli pepper cake topped with whipped cream.

The dinner was enlivened by traditional tunes of the historical Maggiaioli of Castiglione d’Orcia, a local group of the singing tradition whose origins can be traced back to the Middle Ages, as well as by the notes of folk singer Lisetta Luchini, who, accompanied by the guitar and mandolin, performed typical Tuscan songs from “Maremma Amara” to “La Porti un Bacione a Firenze”.
