My Top Reasons For Enjoying the Val d’Orcia, in August

08 august 2016

For most people, especially those who live in the city, August is the classic month for holidays. Those who live in the Val d’Orcia know that August, however, is the best period to enjoy the magical atmosphere of this land.
The scents, the lights and the colours of the countryside are unique: if you are off work, you can spend the day at the beach - which is only about an hour away - to go for a dip and eat delicious fresh seafood, or you can jump into one of the many pools, even hot springs, with a view of the hills, or go for a walk in the cool woods of the Amiata.

But even for those who work all day, the long summer nights offer plenty. There are numerous music festivals at this time of year, and sometimes you have to choose between two or three concerts: from classical music to jazz, from rock to blues.
Some tips? Next appointments are the Festival della Val d’Orcia (, Paesaggi Musicali Toscani ( and Rocca Summer Festival (

Among my favourite events, there is always Incontri in Terra di Siena (, promoted by La Foce: a refined high-level programme, thanks to the top artistic direction of Antonio Lisy. Just a few days ago, I went to the opening concert at Fattoria La Foce after a tour of the wonderful gardens designed by Cecil Pinsent, accompanied by an amazing guide, Benedetta Origo. After a enchanting dinner in the garden, we attended a concert by famous pianist Saleem Ashkar and the Ensemble Polyphony who performed pieces by Beethoven, Fairouz and Shostakovich.
The musical notes that float up to the starry sky, the enthralled eyes of the audience in religious silence, the illuminated villa, the scents that rise up from the earth after a sunny day: these are my top reasons for staying here in August.
