Jogging in a movie

27 april 2016

If you have always lived in a sort of postcard, among hills, fields and cypress trees that have been immortalized in millions of photographs - to the point of no longer understanding if the surrounding countryside is real or if you are actually in the middle of a gigantic poster - your biggest wish is to dive into it, touch the ground, smell the fragrances. For this reason, I have gone running in the countryside for many years now.

Jogging in the Val d’Orcia is like running through an endless movie set. The Val d’Orcia has been chosen as the location for many films in the last thirty years, some even famous on an international level. Franco Zeffirelli chose Bagno Vignoni, Pienza and Montalcino for Romeo and Juliet and for Brother Sun, Sister Moon. Andrej Tarkovskij selected Bagno Vignoni for the set of his captivating Nostalghia.

But the most famous are, without a doubt, The Gladiator and The English Patient. Anthony Minghella set The English Patient in Sant’Anna in Camprena, one of the most spiritual and secluded places in the Val d’Orcia, where the nurse played by Juliette Binoche takes care of the mysterious patient Ralph Fiennes. Some of the most famous scenes in The Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, were filmed in the hills near San Quirico, such as with the main character Russell Crowe’s family and house in the middle of fields of wheat.
So, whoever lives here has the privilege of getting up in the morning, slipping on a pair of running shoes, and going out the door for a run, or simply for a walk, right inside a film. You get to choose which one…
